Build Your Personal Trainer Career at Plymouth Active Life Centre, South West

Plymouth Active Life Centre in the South West is hiring a self-employed personal trainer with multi-centre access to Plympton Swimming Pool & Gym. You keep 100% of your earnings, start with one month rent-free followed by three months at reduced licence rates, and get access to ongoing business development support to help you build a sustainable PT business from day one.

Why work as a personal trainer at Plymouth Active?

Plymouth Active Leisure is a community company wholly owned by Plymouth City Council, running fitness and leisure facilities across the city. The Plymouth Life Centre is one of the city's largest gyms, with 150 stations, three group exercise studios, the HY-NRG HIIT studio, a 12-court sports hall, an Olympic-size pool, and a world-class diving pool that's home to Olympic diver Tonia Couch and was previously home to Tom Daley.

As a self-employed PT here, you set your own schedule, manage your own clients, and run your business entirely on your own terms across both Plymouth Life Centre and Plympton Swimming Pool & Gym.

What does the self-employed PT package at Plymouth Active include?

This vacancy comes with a structured launch package to support you from your first day:

  • One month rent-free, followed by three months at reduced licence rates, giving you time to build your client base before the standard licence fee applies
  • 100% of your earnings retained – everything you make, you keep
  • Multi-centre access to Plymouth Life Centre and Plympton Swimming Pool & Gym, so you can train clients across both venues
  • Access to the Advanced Business Course, a structured programme covering pricing, client acquisition, retention, and longer-term business planning
  • Access to LEVEL UP, an ongoing programme of in-person and online sessions delivered by globally recognised educators in health and fitness, free of charge to attend
  • Access to PT Hub, an online resource centre for self-employed personal trainers

How much can a personal trainer earn at Plymouth Active?

A self-employed PT working full-time through this placement can realistically earn £2,500 to £4,500+ per month by month six, based on YOUR Personal Training network data. By comparison, Indeed’s Plymouth salary data, updated 13 April 2026, puts the broader market average at £24,420 per year, but that figure covers all PT employment types across the city, including employed roles with capped earnings.

In a multi-centre placement with two established member bases to draw from, your earning potential is determined by your session rate, client volume, and how consistently you build your business. The rent-free first month and three months of reduced licence rates give you the runway to establish that client base before the standard fee begins.

What support is available to help you build your PT business?

Three resources are included with this vacancy to support your business development from the outset.

Advanced Business Course

The Advanced Business Course is a structured programme for self-employed PTs. It covers the practical side of running a PT business: pricing your services, acquiring and retaining clients, and planning for longer-term growth. You can work through it alongside your day-to-day client work.

LEVEL UP

LEVEL UP is a year-round programme of in-person and online sessions for self-employed PTs. The events bring globally recognised educators in health and fitness in to deliver practical, applied education on training, business, and client work. Attendance is free.

PT Hub

PT Hub is an online resource centre you can access at any point. It includes templates, guides, and tools built to support self-employed personal trainers at every stage of building their business.

Who can apply for this personal trainer vacancy?

You're the right fit if...

  • You thrive in a gym environment and connect naturally with members
  • You're ambitious, self-motivated, and ready to take ownership of your business
